An Intern at a Tech Firm Receives Pretty Good Pay

Reports in June have been claiming that Facebook, the social media giant, has software engineering interns who are on target to earn an average monthly salary of $6,225, according to Glassdoor.com, a website that provides reviews on companies from current and former employees. Their monthly salary comes out to a annual income of $74,700.

Furthermore, details from some unnamed Facebook interns, put one sophomore student stating they were offered a monthly figure of $5,400 and a $1,000 housing expense allowance. Another computer science graduate student said they got $6,800 a month with a $1,000 housing stipend, negotiated up from $6,600. Based on more data from Glassdoor, Facebook software engineers earn an average annual salary of $111,452.

With software engineers to the key to so many hot start-ups in Silicon Valley, it’s no wonder Facebook and other tech firms are paying top dollar for talent – and aiming to get them before they’ve even gotten their degrees.

So how do interns at the social-networking company measure up in comparison to the same position at other tech firms? In a report from May 2012, GlassDoor lists intern salaries at 20 top-rated companies (rated by current and former interns). The data below is the average monthly salary:

Research intern, Microsoft: $6,746
Software engineering intern, Google: $6,463
Software development engineer intern, Amazon: $5,552
Software development engineer intern, Microsoft: $5,539
Graduate technical intern, Intel: $5,681
Intern, Cisco: $4,017
Intern, IBM: $3,935

It appears conclusive that if you are majoring in computer science it is a very wise choice.
